This route was planned by komoot.
The circular route starts directly from the village of Femés. You can typically find parking within the village itself, near the church or other public areas, as it's a common starting point for hikes in the area.
This hike is classified as moderate. It requires good fitness and sure-footedness due to its uneven, rocky terrain. It's suitable for those who can walk stably on rocky ground and involves an elevation gain of about 260 meters.
Hikers can expect mostly accessible paths, but a significant portion (around 6.16 km) is unpaved. The terrain is rocky, featuring scree and 'picon' (volcanic gravel), with constant slight uphill and downhill sections. It combines hiking paths and mountain hiking paths.
The trail offers stunning geological landscapes and panoramic views. Key highlights include the ancient geology of the Barranco del Higueral, a unique Cactus Oasis on Pico Redondo, and fantastic panoramic views from Olive Peak (Pico de la Aceituna) across the south of Lanzarote.
While dogs are generally allowed on trails in Lanzarote, this route is located within the Monumento Natural Los Ajaches. It's always best to keep dogs on a leash to protect local wildlife and ensure their safety on the rocky terrain. Please be mindful of park regulations regarding pets.
No, there are no specific permits required or entrance fees to hike this trail within the Monumento Natural Los Ajaches. However, as it's a protected natural area, please respect the environment by staying on marked paths and not disturbing flora or fauna.
The best time to hike in Lanzarote, including this trail, is typically during the cooler months from October to May. During these periods, temperatures are more pleasant for hiking, and you can avoid the intense summer heat.
No, there are no facilities to purchase drinks or snacks along the way. Hikers should come prepared with sufficient water and provisions for the entire duration of the hike.
Given the moderate difficulty and rocky terrain, we recommend sturdy hiking shoes, plenty of water, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and snacks. A map or GPS device is also advisable, though the trail is generally well-defined.
Yes, sections of this route follow the official trail known as Calle El Filo, which makes up about 13% of the overall path. This can be useful for navigation or if you wish to explore connecting trails.
Due to its moderate difficulty, rocky and uneven terrain, and lack of facilities, this trail is generally not recommended for very young children or families seeking an easy stroll. Older children with hiking experience and good fitness might enjoy it, but parental discretion is advised.
Surprisingly nice, not monotonous, but be careful on the portion under Pico Redondo. The final detour to Pico de la Aceituna is definitely worth it.
Lonely hike through endless landscapes Depending on where the wind blows the clouds, things are interesting
Great round tour with beautiful views, the varied rock with its colors is particularly great.
On our last day on this beautiful volcanic island 🌋😇, we set off from the lovely mountain town of Femés, around Pico Redondo, and up Pico de la Aceituna. The weather 🌞😎 was once again perfect for hiking in the mountains... just a bit stormy... at least we had to hold on to the fence at the end of the hike to avoid being blown away. 😅 Once we reached the top of the mountain, we walked through a long valley through the Ajaches mountain range. It's a quiet and comfortable hike... but you should still be sure-footed🥾 and free from vertigo🙈, as the trail eventually takes you around the mountain on a narrow path, and if you want, you can even climb to the top. The view of the island and the sea 🌊 was once again fantastic on this tour. And if you have time and a bit of peace and quiet, you might even see a small lizard scurrying by here and there. 🦎🦎 https://www.lanzarote-virtual.com/lanzarote-highlights/femes-am-atalaya
Windy, challenging, sure-footedness required. Beautiful views.
