The nature reserve Ilkerbruch covers an area of 125 ha. It was put under protection in 1989. Approximately 90 hectares of it originated in the years 1984 to
1986 as replacement measure for the construction of the landfill a few kilometers further east. 33 hectares of water were created there, large areas were lowered so that wet meadows could develop there. It's fascinating nature originated from 2nd hand. The costs for the care of the area are borne in the long term by the operators of the landfill, the Wolfsburg waste management and street cleaning (WAS) as well as the Volkswagen AG. The NSG Ilkerbruch lies in the Aller-Urstromtal in an area of high importance for the European, very high importance for the local nature conservation. Almost the entire area between the Mittellandkanal in the south and the B188 in the north, the A39 in the east and the Elbe side channel in the west are part of the Natura 2000 network. With this network, the European Union wants in the long run the diversity of habitats and species in Europe preserve. We in Wolfsburg contribute to this. An impressive number of birds make stops in the area in train times and are then easy to watch.
