Kupferhof Adler (Former Adler Pharmacy)

Highlight • Historical Site

In the early 1570s, Leonard Schleicher from Aachen was the first copper master to recognize the location advantages in the Stolberger Valley that were important for the brass trade (including hydropower and nearby ore and hard coal deposits) and moved his business from Aachen to Stolberg. Here he built the first copper farm on today's Burgstrasse and with it the first stone residential building in Stolberg.

Since this, as well as the later copper yards, had to be built "on greenfield sites", the only construction types that were initially considered were closed, defensible courtyards, the buildings of which were grouped around an inner courtyard and, from the outside, conveyed an uninviting but rather defensive impression.

The current appearance of the former copper farm was only achieved through later renovations and in particular through the associated structure of the facade with window and door openings that were framed with the light bluestone typical of the landscape.
In the area of this copper farm (probably in the neighboring building of the manor house) the so-called Adler Pharmacy was set up in 1790, which was closed in 1971, after almost 200 years of continuous work in the healthcare sector.

Stolberg Old Town

Highlight • Historical Site

The old town of Stolberg around the castle, with its historic half-timbered houses and the so-called copper courtyards ("Kupferhöfe"), was once a center of copper and brass production in Germany. Today, Stolberg bears the nicknames "Copper City and the world's oldest brass city". The picturesque old town with its narrow alleys was renovated in the 1970s and 1980s and is worth a visit not only for those interested in the industrial history of this region.

View of Stolberg Castle

Highlight • Castle

description

Stolberg Castle rises on a steep limestone cliff in the middle of Stolberg's old town in Stolberg (Rhineland) in the North Rhine-Westphalian city region of Aachen. It is the landmark, cradle and namesake of the city.
Stolberg Castle was built by the Lords of Stalburg in the 12th century. In the middle of the 15th century, the Dukes of Jülich pledged the razed complex to the Lords of Nesselrode in order to have it rebuilt as an open house. In the middle of the 16th century, Hieronymus von Efferen had the castle expanded after it had been destroyed. As a result of marriage, the castle and dominion passed from the barons of Efferen to the imperial barons of Raitz von Frentz. In the 18th and 19th centuries the castle fell into ruins. The dilapidated complex came into bourgeois ownership in 1863 from the last aristocratic owners, the Imperial Counts of Kesselstatt. The Stolberg manufacturer Moritz Kraus had the castle rebuilt in the historicist style in 1888 and gave it to the city in 1909.
Today, Stolberg Castle serves as a venue for cultural events and as accommodation for various associations. In the basement there is a gastronomic business and a local history and crafts museum in the Torburg.

The Stolberg district of Breinig has a true landscape jewel in the Schlangenberg nature reserve. What fascinated me most was the yellow calamine violet.

Schlangenberg Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

Around the Schlangenberg nature reserve – an exciting, high moor-like area!

This area was a former ore mine, the mine „Breinigerberg“, from Celtic times until 1883. Interesting how nature has reclaimed the man-made mine. Looking at it, one could call the area the Low Venn, by analogy with the High Venn.
