The Crestawald Fortress is a former artillery work of the Sufers blocking area near Sufers.
The work, created immediately after the start of the war from September 1939, is now a military history museum in which the original bunkers and artillery pieces from the time of World War II are on display. The fortress in the Cresta Forest played an important role as part of the reduit strategy and should be Attack of the Axis powers to block the South-North connection there.
In 2000, after decades of utmost secrecy, which also lasted during the Cold War, the facilities were released and made accessible to the public.
The fortress secured the approaches from the Italian-Swiss border on the Splügen Pass and the San Bernardino Pass from the direction of the Swiss canton of Ticino and protected the Viamala from an attack from the south and south-west. The facility is located between the villages of Sufers and Andeer on the old canton road.
The construction of the fortress began in September 1939 in strict secrecy and was completed in June 1941. The core of the fortress were the two cannons Silvia and Lukrezia, which were realized from a Swedish license construction of a naval gun in Swiss production. These guns had a regular range of 17 km and reduced accuracy of 23 km. They were thus able to shell the heights of the above passes without being significantly endangered by enemy artillery from there. The close defense of the fortress consisted of individual positions for machine guns, anti-tank cannons and three anti-aircraft guns blasted into the rock. A total of 95 soldiers were stationed at the facility and worked around the clock.
In the post-war period, the duty of secrecy initially remained in place while the facilities were further expanded. In 1991 a filter system against chemical warfare agents was installed. The fortress had stored 10,000 projectiles for the two guns.
From the mid-1990s, many Swiss forts were abandoned, including Crestawald. As a result, an association was founded, which turned the complex into a museum
