Großerkmannsdorf

Highlight • Religious Site

Großerkmannsdorf is a district of the large district town of Radeberg in the Bautzen district of Saxony, located on the southern edge of the town. It borders the Dresdner Heide (Dresden Heath), the Karswald (Kars Forest), and the Schönfelder Hochland (Schönfeld Upland). The Goldbach stream flows through the town, later flowing into the Große Röder (Greater Röder). ### History
The first documented mention of Großerkmannsdorf dates back to 1353 under the name "Erkenbrechtesdorf." The current name developed over several centuries. During the Thirty Years' War, the village was repeatedly plundered and partially burned down. The present church was built in 1702 and completed in 1721 with the construction of the church tower.
### Infrastructure and Transportation
Großerkmannsdorf is connected to Radeberg and Dresden by State Road 181. Federal Highway 6 runs along the southern edge of the municipality. Since December 2008, State Road 177 has served as a bypass around the town. Bus lines connect Großerkmannsdorf with Dresden, Radeberg, and surrounding communities.
### Community and Culture
The town has a lively club life. The Großerkmannsdorf Local History Association operates a local history room and organizes events such as the Open Monument Day. The Großerkmannsdorf Carnival Club 1967 is known for its carnival events. The volunteer fire department has existed since 1900, and the Großerkmannsdorf Brass Band, which originated from a fire department band, was founded in 1961.
### Sights

There are several historical monuments in Großerkmannsdorf:
- **Atonement Cross**: Commemorates a dispute in 1634 between residents of Großerkmannsdorf and Radeberg.
- **Murder Stone**: Commemorates the murder of the Schullwitz messenger E. R. Schmidt in 1883. ([List of monuments, sculptures, and plaques in Radeberg]
- **Century Stone**: A stele commemorating the Wars of Liberation of 1813, erected in 1913.
### Special Features
Großerkmannsdorf is home to the only mounted police unit in the new federal states. In the 2007 "Our Village Has a Future" competition, the village was recognized for outstanding achievements in preserving and developing village community life.
With its rich history, active club life, and natural setting, Großerkmannsdorf offers a high quality of life and a strong sense of community.

Arnsdorf Village Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The age of the Arnsdorf village church is estimated at around 630 years. It is located in the middle of the village and consists of a rectangular hall building from 1638 and a late Gothic choir.
The ceiling of the nave consists of a painted field ceiling from 1719/1720, which has been hidden under plaster for many years and has been shining in its restored beauty since 2001.
The altar, dating from the late Renaissance and dating from 1632 and featuring pictures by G. Kleggler, was previously in the Kunigundenkirche in Borna.

In earlier times, the cemetery was located around the church within the churchyard walls, and some gravestones can still be seen today. A few meters from the church is the bell tower from 1918 with its three cast-iron bells tuned to the notes "b", "gis" and "e".

Wallroda Reservoir

Highlight • Lake

"The Wallroda dam is a dam in the Free State of Saxony. The dammed body of water is the Steinbach, a left tributary of the Große Röder.

The entire dam including the adjacent forest is part of the Massenei landscape protection area. Various types of dragonflies are native to the reed-covered shores of the lake, for example the great blue arrow and the blood-red darter. "- de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talsperre_Wallroda
