St Olaf's Church, Wasdale

Highlight • Religious Site

A belief that the roof beams came from a Viking longship may have lead to the dedication to St Olaf, the patron saint of Norway in 1974. One can imagine relatives of local climbers saying a silent prayer here; the inscriptions on the graves in the churchyard make for poignant reading.

On the south window is an etching of Napes Needle: Great Gables great rock pinnacle that played such a significant role in the birth of English rock climbing.

Moses Trod

Highlight • Viewpoint

Named after Moses Rigg, an 18th-century quarryman who established this path as the fastest way through the mountains between the slate mines at Honister and Wasdale. Today, the route is a pleasure to hike and provides access to Great Gable's mighty crags. The views from this section towards Gable's Napes Crag is particularly stirring.

Sty Head Stretcher Box

Highlight • Trail

Sty Head is the apex of an ancient and wild trade route between Borrowdale and Wasdale, the Styhead Pass. Right in the mountainous heart of the Lake District, it separates two giants, the charismatic Great Gable and Great End, the lofty north-western termination of the Scafell massif.

Its position makes it the meeting point of six distinct paths. As well as the two trails from Wasdale and the one from Borrowdale, another two seek out Great Gable, while the other ventures up into the Scafells. The top of the pass is also the location of a mountain rescue stretcher box, highlighting the seriousness of the mountain terrain that surrounds it.

View of Styhead Tarn

Highlight • Lake

A nice place to stop and have a bite to eat, or allow others to catch up. Has been known that a few wild campers pitch up here.

Scafell Pike

Highlight • Summit

The weather can change 20 times before you summit. Make sure you have layers and if possible a hot drink. Ive done this twice both in August's and have been sun burnt on the bottom and wind burnt on the top. 😵‍💫

Scafell Pike summit

Highlight • Summit

At 3,209 feet (978 m) Scafell Pike is England's highest mountain. The summit is also one of the most stunning due to its remote location and awe-inspiring views. While many people conquer Scafell Pike every year, the climb to the top should not be underestimated. Make sure you are fully prepared (clothing, compass, water, etc). Enjoy!
