Siegfriedsdorf Memorial and Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

Do you know Siegfriedsdorf? Not really? That's right, that's not possible. For in 1427 a Hussite army reached the small town and devastated it completely. Only a chapel fragment and a fountain are reminiscent of this site. In the 12th century, the settlement was built above the monastery Marienthal at Ostritz. Siegfriedsdorf stretched along a small stream near the present federal road 99. From the mountain peace, a bumpy parking lot, you reach the former site after only five minutes walk.

Until 1855 there was still field, then the monastery forest was created and expanded. As a documentary mention is referred to the Bohemian Queen Kunigunde, who founded the monastery in 1234 and referred to the then "Sifridsdorf" written place reference. In 1241 King Wenceslas confirmed the donation to the monastery. In 1834, as can be read in Schönfelder's "History of the Monastery", Siegfriedsdorf still recognizes the remains of the foundations. Statue of Pope John Paul II

Highlight • Monument

Karol Wojtyla, better known to many as "Pope John Paul II", was born in Wadowice, Poland, in 1920. After the death of Pope John Paul I in the "Three Popes Year" in 1978, he succeeded him at the head of the Roman Catholic Church chosen. As a young man he experienced dictatorships under the Nazi injustice regime of German-occupied Poland and later under the communist rule. His support for freedom efforts, especially in the countries of Eastern Europe, and his part in the fall of the so-called "Iron Curtain", which separated the Western European states from the Eastern bloc, was correspondingly great and passionate during the time of the so-called "Cold War".
Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II) died in the Vatican in 2005 after a long illness.

Great section of the Oder-Neiße cycle path with great surface, which, however, historically changes to cobblestones at the monastery. The monastery complex is definitely worth seeing and has a place to stop for refreshments and a toilet.
