The Forum :terra nova is located directly at the Hambach opencast mine and offers a breathtaking view of the largest lignite mine in Europe. The facade represents the colors and structure of the layers of earth from the opencast mine. In addition to gastronomy, the forum also functions as an event location and offers, for example, concerts (“Music with a View”), exhibitions and readings. Thanks to the spacious outdoor terrace, playground and e-bike charging stations, it is ideal for a long break.

Hambach Open-pit Mine Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Hambach opencast mine is one of three remaining active opencast mines in the Rhenish lignite mining area. It is the largest lignite mine in Europe and is located in the middle of the lignite mining area between the municipality of Niederzier and the town of Elsdorf. The Hambach opencast mine was started in 1978 near the Niederzier district of Hambach and is over 350 meters deep. 1.35 billion tons of brown coal are stored beneath its 85 square kilometer mining field. Around 40 million tons of coal are mined every year.

Really great route, a total of 14 km long and the old long-distance belt route (no spelling mistake) that connects the various mining areas.

Erft Flood Canal

Highlight • River

The Erft flood canal in its current form was created by Erft amelioration in the middle of the 19th century. The term melioration comes from agriculture and forestry and originally meant something like soil improvement. Earth amelioration became necessary because the groundwater along the river had been artificially raised by the action of many medieval mills. The result was a swamping of the Erftaue with serious health consequences for the population - for example through malaria. The straightening of the Erft created the conditions for the water to drain off faster again. As a result, the water and groundwater levels dropped and the adjacent areas became usable for agriculture.

July 6, 2022,Bedburg - Tagebau Hambach
The first 15 km are rather dreary in terms of landscape. The highlight is of course the vantage point at the TERRA NOVA opencast mine. The last 10km along the Erft are very beautiful.

New Year's meeting with nice like-minded people🚴‍♂️. I'm already looking forward to the next meeting!

It was time to visit the Altstadtstuben in Bedburg again. So got the bikes out, braved the weather and off we went.
And what can I say, it was worth it again. 😋
Kind regards

Was a nice tour 🚴‍♀️
Shift down a gear at the old mud pond...drive at walking pace.
The Peringsmaar is bigger than I thought. nature as I like it

Showing Translation

The new bikes had to be tried out. 🚲
That's why we took a tour of the district to get to know each other. The stop at the ice cream parlor in Bergheim was fully planned! 😋

Unfortunately, I didn't get to take pictures!
