Former Florival Abbey

Highlight • Historical Site

According to legend, the abbey of Florival was founded in the 11th century, when a monastic community heard a voice telling them to look for a particularly flowery place to settle there. She thus settled in a valley strewn with flowers which she named “Floral Vaux” which gave its name to the abbey. Around 1218, the community joined the order of Cîteaux. Rebuilt several times over the centuries, the abbey did not survive the French Revolution. On the site it once occupied, a castle was built in the 19th century. It is now occupied by the federal training center for emergency services. Among the remains of this Cistercian occupation is a well-preserved carriage house from the second half of the 18th century. Access to the enclosure is through a large gate surmounted by a tower topped with a polygonal spire. This door is surmounted by coats of arms accompanied by the motto “Labore et vigilantia”, “work and vigilance”. On entering the premises, you can see a 19th century building which has preserved older elements, including an arched door stamped with a crosier and the initials of Abbess Ide Bernaerts, as well as the date of 1687. The building has a second bas-relief, dated 1765 and bearing the monogram of Alexandrine de Comembourg. The site is surrounded by a beautiful park in which the ruins of the abbey enclosure can be guessed.

Since the Tudor/Exide battery factory ceased operations in 2016, the business zone near Florival station has fallen into disrepair. The site, with an area of approximately 11 hectares, is partly located in Walloon Brabant and partly in Flemish Brabant. At the beginning of 2024, both municipalities and provinces entered into a cooperation agreement to redevelop the dilapidated site. A master plan is being drawn up for the entire Florival site. A great opportunity to create a gateway to the recently recognized Brabantse Wouden National Park here
