View of the Broel Towers

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Leiebrug is a bridge in the center of the Belgian city of Kortrijk. The bridge spans the river Leie and connects the Leiestraat with the Budastraat. The Leiebrug is located at a location where for centuries a bridge has provided the connection between the Grote Markt and the Buda and Overleie districts.

Broel Towers

Highlight • Monument

The Leieborden, i.e. the banks of the Leie, are an oasis par excellence where young and old meet and where you can get to know the locals.
Here you can sit comfortably on one of the terraces and people watch or you can get a coffee to go and sit comfortably on the quay with a view of the beautiful Broeltorens, some of the few remains of the old city fortifications.

Church of Our Lady, Kortrijk

Highlight • Religious Site

The oldest parts of this early Gothic collegiate church date from the mid-13th century. The choir was replaced by a new one after 1300, with an ambulatory and side chapels. After the Battle of Westrozebeke (1382), the church was badly damaged and largely rebuilt. Other renovations took place in the 16th and 17th centuries and after the Second World War. The interior was built in a rich Baroque style in the 17th century, after the iconoclasm. On the south side is the Count's Chapel, built by Lodewijk van Male in 1370. The niches contain paintings of the former rulers of the County of Flanders.
The church stood on the count's domain. In 1300, this place was occupied by French troops and fortified into a fortress. After the Bruges Matins, Flemish troops came to besiege the castle. On 11 July 1302, the conflict with France reached a peak. You can relive the story of the Battle of the Golden Spurs here in the permanent exhibition '1302: Uprising, Battle, Turning Point'.

Belfry

Highlight • Monument

Belfry tower, located in the middle of the Market Square. On the southeastern side marked by the war memorial of the First World War.
The belfry was part of the small or old hall. The hall building actually consisted of two parts: the belfry, called Halletoren or "het Halleke", and the cloth hall itself. After the commissioning of the Nieuwe or Grote Hallen in 1540, built by the Antwerp resident Pieter Theels on the current Schouwburgplein, it was only used for the retail of all kinds of goods during the Monday and annual markets.
The current appearance of the Halletoren was mainly determined in 1520 with the reconstruction of the upper part and in 1899 with the demolition of the surrounding buildings.

Groeninge Monument

Highlight • Monument

The Groeninge Monument is a memorial in the Belgian city of Kortrijk. The gilded sculpture was erected on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the Battle of the Golden Spurs and is located in the Groeninge Park, where the Groeninge Field was located in the Middle Ages. The Groeninge Park can be entered via the Groeninge Gate, a triumphal arch that also commemorates the victory during the Battle of the Golden Spurs. The Groeninge Monument was created by the sculptor Godfried Devreese. It was originally to be inaugurated in 1902, but it was not finished until four years later and was ceremonially unveiled on 5 August 1906. The gilded statue represents the Virgin of Flanders, holding a spear in the direction of defeated France with one hand, and holding the proud Flemish lion, who has broken the chains, with the other hand. At the bottom of the monument we see Robert II of Artois, grandson of the French king Louis and governor of Flanders, lying dead under his horse.

Groeninge Gate

Highlight • Monument

The gate commemorates one of the most important battles of the Middle Ages. It's a David vs. Goliath story and one about longing for freedom. The ill-equipped Flemings fought against the French armed to the teeth. infantry; Weavers and other artisans opposed knights trained to kill.

Everything looked like the Flemish would lose. But as is well known, pride comes before a fall and the French underestimate the swampy terrain and above all the desperation with which the Flemish fought for their freedom. It happened as it usually only happens in Hollywood films: the Flemings won.

They proudly exhibited the captured spurs of the dead opponents in the Church of Our Lady - hence the name of the fight: The Battle of the Golden Spurs.

The second Kortrijk triennial will take place from June 26 to October 24, 2021. The international art project Paradise focuses on the utopian dream of paradise, with a range of interpretations of that concept. The project draws inspiration from our zeitgeist. It is a reaction to our current environment, which sometimes seems miles away from a hopeful, positive and utopian …
