Ramsgate Beach

Highlight • Beach

Ramsgate has a fantastic harbour front with loads of great all-year-round restaurants and bars to enjoy after a day's cycling and exploring the area. Or you can chill out with a bag of chips on the sandy beaches after a great cycle! There's the Viking Coastal Trail which loops around the whole 'Isle of Thanet' (route 15 on the signposts) and more recently, the Pier to Pier cycle taking you from Ramsgate to Deal which is listed on the Visit Ramsgate website. The town itself has a growing creative and music scene with lots of independent shops to explore. Head to Harbour Bikes in one of the harbour's iconic arches for bike hire, servicing and repair should you need it!

Sandwich Town Centre

Highlight • Settlement

A quintessentially-English town, Sandwich has a fascinating history. The small town was once an important trade hub and part of the Cinque Ports network on the coast. The medieval buildings and old pubs in town hark back to this era.

Sandwich's most notable role in history is perhaps its ties to the popular food, the humble sandwich. John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, allegedly invented the sandwich in the 18th century, putting together two pieces of bread and meat.

Walmer Castle

Highlight • Monument

Walmer Castle is an artillery fort originally built by Henry VIII in Walmer, Kent, between 1539 and 1540. It was part of the King's Device program to protect against invasions from France and the Holy Roman Empire, defending the strategically important Downs anchorage off the English coast. Walmer Castle later became the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and was gradually transformed from a military fortress into a private residence. Inside the castle there are new areas to explore, opening to the public for the first time in 2024. Discover the Lord Warden's private chambers and see where the Queen Mother stayed during her visits. The grounds include the Queen Mother's Garden, designed by Penelope Hobhouse as a 95th birthday present for Elizabeth in 1997.

Deal Castle

Highlight • Monument

Deal Castle is an artillery fort built by Henry VIII in Deal, Kent, between 1539 and 1540. It was part of the King's Device program to protect against invasions from France and the Holy Roman Empire, and defended the strategically important Downs anchorage off the English coast. Consisting of a keep with six inner and outer bastions, the water-surrounded stone castle covered 0.85 acres (0.34 ha) and had sixty-six firing positions for artillery. During the Second English Civil War of 1648-49, Deal was captured by pro-Royalist rebels and was only recaptured by Parliamentary forces after several months of fighting. Although still armed, Deal was adapted by Sir John Norris and Lord Carrington during the 18th and 19th centuries to form a more suitable private home for the captain of the castle, which was now an honorary title.

King George VI Memorial Park

Highlight • Historical Site

Leaving Ramsgate for Broadstairs you will pass through ‘King George VI Memorial Park’, formed from the grounds of East Cliff Lodge, the home for over fifty years of Sir Moses Montefiore (1784-1885). Sir Moses Montefiore was a towering and prominent figure of Victorian England, who was passionate in both his beliefs as a Jew and an Englishman. His philanthropic projects and activism earned him a Knighthood by Queen Victoria. In the park you will find an early nineteenth-century Italianate Glasshouse, an oasis of calm and a super place to enjoy tea and cake

August 20, 2023,Ich bin dann mal weg 🙋🏼‍♀️ Tag 40: Kingsdown Camping > Margate 🇬🇧
On day 40 I didn't get away from Kingsdown 🇬🇧 campsite until around 1pm.
I had to wait until 12 p.m. anyway, because I brought my devices to the reception for 3 hours to be charged and thus got the most expensive electricity of my life 😳.
