View of Alton Barnes White Horse

Highlight • Monument

One of Wiltshire's many white chalk horses, the Alton Barnes White Horse was cut in the early 1800s on the request of a local farmer. Well-maintained and much-visited, the horse lies just under a mile north of the village of Alton on the Pewsey Downs. Also on the hill is a long barrow and several examples of cross dykes, which are prehistoric earthworks.

The White Horse Trail passes right past it while the Ridgeway and the Great Stones Way pass nearby.

I could only find kissing gates on my route out. A bit of a problem with a bike.

One of many along the enchanting Kennet and Avon Canal

This picturesque bridge spans the Kennet and Avon Canal in the hamlet of Honeystreet. With less than 30 houses, this tiny settlement sits beneath the southern scarp of the Marlborough Downs right alongside the historic Ridgeway trail.

The canal here at Honeystreet often has brightly coloured narrowboats moored up along the wharf and you can even take trips in one. There's a cafe and a pub here too, making it a lovely spot for a bit of lunch.

Walkers Hill

Highlight • Natural Monument

Walkers Hill is a fantastic place from which to admire the Vale of Pewsey and surrounding downland. On a clear day, the vistas are exceptional, but the hill itself has plenty of interesting historical features.

Adam's Grave is the most notable – a Neolithic long barrow. There are cross dykes (prehistoric earthworks), tumuli and ditches littered about the hillside too, typical of Wiltshire's ancient land. Just to the northwest lies the Alton Barnes white horse, cut in 1812.

Knap Hill Car Park

Highlight • Parking

Knap Hill car park is a particularly useful spot from which to explore this section of the North Wessex Downs AONB and the Vale of Pewsey. Footpaths and bridleways head off in every direction from the car park and it's easy to create hiking routes as long or short as you like.

The Alton Barnes white horse is just to the west, although it's best seen from a little further afield.
