The starting point of this highly recommended hike is behind the Opéra Bastille, site of the demolished Gare de la Bastille railway station.

A staircase from Rue de Lyon leads to the "Coulée Verte de René Daumesnil" (formerly "Promenade Plantée"), a 4.5 km long disused railway line that has now been transformed into a planted promenade.
