Birkenwiese Bridge Dornbirn

Highlight • Bridge

Exhilarated to the other bank
A bridge is a bridge is a bridge. Marte Marte architects always manage to reduce the spanning of rivers to the essentials; the essence is extracted from the context and the concern to combine beauty and function. With the Birkenwiese bridge, the city of Dornbirn has gained an infrastructure structure that marries with its surroundings and allows pedestrians and cyclists crossing it to be light-footed and exhilarated.

Quality of the place
The Dornbirner Ache runs tangentially to the center, forming the intersection between the city center and the peripheral districts. The riverbed and riverside paths are a local recreation area for both sides; the natural area, which is kept in check by stone walls in the city area, encourages fishing, swimming, being alone or together and, the more you move away from the city, is enchanting with its bordering alluvial forest. In the Birkenwiese area, the river Ache is already idyllically surrounded by vines, shrub-covered embankments make the river area HQ 100 safe, broken gravel and watercourse form gravel banks that are in constant change. What is a single-family home district on one side is a multifunctional mixed area on the other. Immediately in front of the bicycle and pedestrian bridge on the south side is the new Birkenwiese retirement home with its white washed bricks and rust-red glazed wooden windows. In addition to the natural area, the design of the bridge also borrows from this and links the structure with its surroundings.

Lightness of being
The adverse conditions of the location were made into a virtue. Since the flanks of the river Ache are very low at this point, the bridge was all the more slender in its static height. It is a steel hollow box made of Corten that spans the flat riverbed and is firmly anchored in the reinforced concrete abutment, the edges of the long sides elegantly tapering towards the middle. The concrete work on the abutments is also minimal and precise, and forms the river bank on the accompanying Achweg as if it were a matter of course. The structure, which weighs several tons and was designed by M+G Ingenieure, gains its lightness through its simplicity, gestures and choice of materials. The wide driving and walking area, light red and sprinkled with quartz sand, bends slightly offset in the middle towards the dam on one side, making it easier to join the state cycle path in both main directions. It is lined with a filigree, rhombus-shaped picket fence that provides a view of the spectacular natural area and entices those crossing to look curiously to the right and left. Pedestrians, cyclists and those lingering on the adjacent benches form a relaxed scenario, almost cheerful on this light blue summer day; the figures move effortlessly and without collision over the rust-red catwalk of everyday life, which connects them with flora and fauna, earth, water and sky... Not every bridge can be said to conjure up a smile on the face of passers-by; and that is because beauty and function marry in a simple, yet so devoted way.
