Santa Maria Val Müstair

Highlight • Settlement

Santa Maria Val Müstair
The street village is located in the Münstertal at 1375 m above sea level at the exit of the Val Muraunza valley. The Muranzina, coming from the valley, flows through the village before it flows into the Rambach. Main road 28 runs through Santa Maria, which leads over the Ofenpass to Zernez in the Lower Engadine and to the state border at Taufers in the Münstertal. In the village, the Umbrailpass road branches off from the main road, which leads to Bormio in the Valtellina.
After Charlemagne escaped a terrible storm with divine help, according to legend he laid the foundation stone of the community in 801 by building a chapel.
The community of Santa Maria was first mentioned in documents in 1167/70 as Capellam sancte Maria in Silvaplana. This was a chapel. The village gradually grew up around the chapel.

Unfortunately, Santa Maria has been a beautiful village plagued by through traffic for decades. A walk along the stream that flows down from the Umbrail Pass and then back up into the village is worth it. The fine game specialties in the modern butcher's shop and the fine nut tarts in the Meier bakery/confectionery are always part of my visit to Santa Maria, where Donna Leon lives, by the way. I can also only recommend a visit to the hand weaving mill.

Banks of the Rom River

Highlight • River

It's a wonderful place for hiking. The path is currently partially diverted, there was probably a flood.

Nice and shady and something to look at. The mill wheel here doesn't make any sense, but there is one in Sta. Maria Val Mustair.

Museum 14/18 Sta. Maria

Highlight • Historical Site

Museum Sta. Maria
Sta. Due to its geographical location, Maria is the main town in Val Müstair. From here, the Umbrail pass road, which is only open in summer, leads over to the Italian Veltlin and to the summer ski area on the Stelvio Pass. The density of cultural offerings is also remarkable. While old craftsmanship awaits you in the Tessanda hand weaving workshop and the Muglin Mall, the Museum 14/18 brings wartime events on the Umbrail back to life. Whiskey lovers, on the other hand, are awaited in the "Smallest Whiskey Bar on Earth".
