The Terek[a] (/ˈtɛrɪk/) is a major river in the Northern Caucasus. It originates in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region of Georgia and flows through North Caucasus region of Russia into the Caspian Sea. It rises near the juncture of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range and the Khokh Range, to the southwest of Mount Kazbek, winding north in a white torrent between the town of Stepantsminda and the village of Gergeti toward the Russian region North Ossetia and the city of Vladikavkaz. It turns east to flow through Chechnya and Dagestan before dividing into two branches which empty into the Caspian Sea. Below the city of Kizlyar it forms a swampy river delta around 100 kilometres (62 mi) wide. The river is a key natural asset in the region, providing irrigation and hydroelectric power in its upper reaches.

At 7:30 AM we were already in Kobi, ready for a hike through the Truso Gorge.
The gorge is special because of unique geological phenomena.
Travertine is formed here. It is the rock with which the entire Sacré-Coeur is built. A bit more technical: a limestone formed by the precipitation of calcium from calcium carbonate-supersaturated water from hot springs.

Very nice hike along the Valley. Its a rough road to get there but its worth going for. If you are not willing to hike that long, its still possible to drive another 4km closer to the valley, but roads get very narrow and the road has the width for one car only.

The tour starts at the parking lot in front of the bridge in Okrokana. You can also have a taxi take you further down the valley, but then you'll annoy other hikers and it's nicer anyway if you don't have a window between you and the landscape.
After approx. 3.5 km the valley opens up and you pass the campsite …

The destination of the hike is the ruins of the Zakagori fortress and leads past the Abano nunnery. The ruins mark the last Georgian border post before the Russian border, which is about 5 km away.
