Burg Rappottenstein Parking Lot

Highlight • Parking

The mighty castle is enthroned on a rocky cone rising steeply from the valley of the Kleiner Kamp. It is one of the oldest landmarks in the northwestern Waldviertel.
Rappottenstein Castle was of great importance from the very beginning. On the one hand, it was located in the middle of the extensive Kuenringer holdings, so it was a stable center in a turbulent time, on the other hand, it also protected the ancient connection path ("Pehamsteig"), which is still verifiable in the municipality today, which led from the Danube through the northern forest into the Bohemian countryside .
In addition, Rappottenstein Castle was one of the strongest links in the chain of fortifications that was built on the course of the Kamp River, which had the task of protecting the country from invasions by the Bohemians and thus also providing flank protection for the Babenbergermark.

Rappottenstein is a fortress that clearly shows three building epochs, Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance.
The southern part of the stronghold dates from the time of the Kuenringer. Its massive walls, which tower up windowless above the steep granite rock and formed the original fortification, greet the visitor before entering the fortress. The walls are at an obtuse angle to each other, they adapt to the course of the rock in the foundations.
The keep in the north - the main tower of the castle - guards the complex from the highest point on the rock massif. The oldest buildings, which date from the second half of the 12th century and enclose a small courtyard, extend between the keep and the gate tower, which once towered over the strong walls and blocked access to the stronghold.

Arbesbach Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

The ruin is also called the stick tooth of the Waldviertel. At the end of the 12th century Hadmar von Kuenring had the castle built on a huge granite rock. From 1277 to 1593 the ruin was the seat of the district court. The 25 meter high, pentagonal keep partially collapsed more than 500 years ago. From then on the castle was left to decay.
