Arenenberg Park and Gardens

Highlight • Natural

The current park is called "Arenenberger Gartenwelt" (“Arenenberg garden world”).
It constitutes a remarkable journey through more than 600 years of European garden history.

Discover:
- An old patrician-style medieval garden;
- Renaissance and Baroque influences;
- A vast romantic 19th-century landscape park created under Queen Hortense de Beauharnais and later developed by her son Louis-Napoléon, the future Napoleon III.

The estate also includes:
- Historic vineyards;
- Vegetable gardens and orchards;
- Artificial grottos;
- An old hermitage;
- An ice cellar (“Eiskeller”);
- Panoramic paths overlooking Lake Constance.

One of the park's particularities is its very "French" romantic aspect: play of light and shadow, perspectives over the lake, isolated trees, and winding paths reminiscent of the great 19th-century landscape gardens.

The park was partially abandoned for a long time before a major archaeological and landscape restoration was launched in the 2000s. Several disappeared elements were recreated according to historical plans from the Napoleonic era.

Practical information:
- Access to the park is generally free;
- A walking loop of about 1 hour;
- Numerous historical panels;
- Magnificent viewpoints over Reichenau and the Untersee.

The museum can only be visited as part of a guided tour, which however gives a very interesting insight into the life of Hortense and Eugénie (mother and wife of Napoléon III). Admission: 15 francs.

I'll start today's blog with a saying: As long as you don't "stand still", it will keep going.

Since standing still was not an option, we continued again. What is said in Paris about Versailles is said in Constance and in the region about the Arenenberg. Arenenberg Castle is located at one of the most beautiful vantage points in the …

Napoleon III, later Emperor of France, spent a large part of his youth in Thurgau at Arenenberg Castle and is the only honorary citizen of the canton of Thurgau. He attended the evangelical grammar school in Augsburg, spoke German well and could also speak the Thurgau dialect. What many people don't know is that Napoleon III was a technology nerd. …

Did a short "workout" lap and blown your head free. Finally no fog but really glorious weather and mild temperatures. On Tuesday it's supposed to be a little warmer and even sunnier and so the plan is set - tomorrow we're going to the Bike Park, Bike or Die 🤟.

In search of sunshine we went to Ermatingen! I wasn't deterred by the wafts of fog😶‍🌫️🌫 that came towards the lake🤩! Although the lake was invisible today, the round with the tunnel grotto, bubble hotel and hermitage etc had its charm...😶‍🌫️🌫⛲️!
By the way: the roses 🌹 smelled sensational

Nothing historical today, a simple frosty circular hike and anyone who knows me knows that I like aphorisms. Hence a short quote: "It is useless to complain about the cold around us as long as we are not ready to warm to each other". Ernst Ferstl
