Rheininsel / Île du Rhin Hartheim and/or Fessenheim

Highlight (Segment) • Other

The Rhine island lies between Hartheim on the German side and Fessenheim on the French side. The Old Rhine borders the island's eastern shore, which faces the German side, and the Grand Canal d’Alsace on the western shore, which faces the French side. The narrow, approximately 1 km long stretch of road sees little traffic and is rather atypical for the area, yet quite charming. This so-called dry floodplain was formed by erosion following the straightening of the Rhine by the civil engineer Tulla. It provides habitat for a number of rare to very rare plant and animal species.

Apart from the naturally quite interesting lock system, one can also visit the hydroelectric power plant, there is a freely accessible visitor balcony from which one can overlook the entire turbine hall. Even the "Maison des Energies" is worth a visit - even if the sponsor will probably be found a few kilometers further up the Grand Canal.

You can get here over the Rhine, of course, but the alternative in the north near Marckolsheim is much smaller and therefore less traffic-intensive, and on the German side, for example, can be ideally combined with the great route past Limburg to Sasbach

On the Ile du Rhin you can take a little break in the shade of some trees. Alternatively, there is a conveniently located snack bar on the German side of the Europabrücke, which in its name could be operated by Scots, but offers fast (or junk) food rather than haggis and red and white labeled effervescent.

Breisach town centre

Highlight • Settlement

A very beautiful city center! There are numerous places to stop for a bite to eat and plenty of (shady) seating.

On the right a maize field, on the left a beautiful view of the Tuniberg, which by the way is also easy to drive up to!
