Marmaris

Highlight • Settlement

Marmaris is where the Mediterranean meets the Aegean, where green verdant forests meet the famous turquoise waters of the sea, and where modern culture meets ancient civilizations.

Marmaris is one of the popular tourism towns of Muğla, with its natural beauty, long coastline, magnificent view from pine covered hills, virgin bays, beaches, ancient cities, yacht marinas and cruise harbour.

Marmaris has been an important port for many civilizations who have ruled over in the area for thousands of e years with its geographical location at the intersection of two seas.

Ancient Physkos, known as the "City of nature" in Carian language was the first Carian port city and the center of other settlements in the region.

Ancient ruins of this important port city dating back to 3400 BCE can be seen in Asartepe, in the north of Marmaris city.

Marmaris is the destination for those who want to relax, explore natural beauty and the rich history of the region. The destination for those who want to the enjoy the turquoise sea and golden sands and try many water- and land-based sporting activities.

Marmaris Castle

Highlight • Castle

The town centre of Marmaris is where the castle, port and marina are located. The medieval castle, now a museum, that overlooks the whole area around the harbour and gives you a taste of the old town's character. Many of these historical structures are in a good state of preservation. Marmaris Castle organized as Archaeology Museum is one and only museum in Marmaris. Amphora pieces belonging to the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods and pottery and glassware, coins and ornaments found in excavations in the Knidos, Hisarönü and Burgaz regions are exhibited in there.

Marmaris Harbour

Highlight • Structure

It might not look like it but there is organised chaos to the boat moorings! Nearest the marina are privately owned mega yachts, saving on the extortionate Netsel marina fees by being just outside, then day trip boats, then dive boats, then the ridiculous tourist party boats (if you fancy a pirate ship or an Egyptian themed monstrosity, you’ll find it here).

Marmaris Castle

Highlight • Castle

The fort is an interesting destination for a family holiday, as the castle complex is also exciting for children. The old walls start directly above the harbor area and from the castle you can enjoy a beautiful view of the old town, the harbor and the Mediterranean coast.

In 1522, Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent commissioned the construction of the castle and citadel. The occasion was his victory over Rhodes and it is said that Süleyman intended to build a fort that could still be seen from Rhodes, the defeated city.

Nowadays the castle is open for tours. There is a historical museum inside the Marmaris Kalesi Castle. The opening times are from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Entry costs 3 euros.

Perfect if you’re in the market for t-shirts or Turkish delight, but disappointingly plain architecturally.
