Bille Bridge at the Brewery Ponds

Highlight • Bridge

Attractive wooden bridge that leads from the Billewanderweg over the Bille to the brewery pond.
From the bridge you have great views of the Bille and the pond.

Bille Hiking Trail

Highlight • Trail

I find this part of the Bille between Bergedorf and Aumühle even more attractive and less crowded than the northern part of the Bille to Friedrichsruh. It is practical that you can do a circular hike from Bergedorf, one side to the Bille and back on the other.

Bootshaus Bergedorf Boat Rental

Highlight • Rest Area

You can recharge your batteries, switch off and experience nature at the boat rental in the heart of Bergedorf, which has been here for 40 years.
Just five minutes from the train station, you can forget the hustle and bustle of the big city and experience the romance and idyll of the Bille up close.

Schillergarten Community Garden

Highlight • Structure

In addition to gardening, it is primarily about togetherness, a sense of community and the rediscovery of skills. Environmentally conscious action, nutrition, regionality, a balanced way of life, initiatives and projects that are already working successfully, including worldwide, are presented in the garden as part of film screenings and then discussed.

The old port of Bergedorf, the Serrahn, is still an attractive place. With the old crane, the Gemüseewer (replica), the catering on the water and the Billewehr.

St. Peter and Paul Church, Bergedorf

Highlight • Religious Site

The church in Bergedorf is called St. Petri and Pauli.

The first written mention of a church in the center of Bergedorf took place in the years 1162 and 1178. It belonged at that time to the diocese of Ratzeburg and is mentioned as an existing church with nine associated villages in the Elbmarsch. So it could well have been founded before the first mention. Up to the 15th century, there are up to three sacred benefices (one pastor and two vicars) for this church.

Presumably due to dilapidation this first (still only the Apostle Peter consecrated) church was demolished in 1499 and initially started under the supervision of the Hamburg bishop Christian Berskamp with a new building. From 1501, the Lübeck councilman Hermann Messmann led the construction. The majority of the craftsmen who carried out the new building (carpenters, bricklayers, glaziers, floor layers) came from Hamburg. On June 29, 1502, at the Feast of Peter and Paul, the St. Peter and Paul Church, newly built as a half-timbered room, was consecrated by the Bishop of Ratzeburg to John of Parkentin.

The church is open from 12 to 18 o'clock (if it is possible).

Bergedorf Woodland

Highlight • Forest

The Bergedorfer Gehölz is a beautiful nature reserve in the east of Hamburg.

It covers an area of several hectares and is home to a variety of plant and animal species. "Gehölz" refers to a collection of trees and shrubs that create an ecological balance and provide habitat for many living creatures.

The Bergedorfer Gehölz has a rich history. It was first designated as a protected area in 1908 and has undergone numerous changes since then.

Originally, the Bergedorfer Gehölz was part of a larger forest area that spanned the entire region. Over the centuries, however, the forest was severely decimated, and only the Bergedorfer Gehölz remains as a remnant.

In the past, the grove was used by the local population primarily as a source of timber. The trees were felled, and the wood was used to build houses and as fuel.

However, in the 1970s, the Bergedorfer Gehölz was recognized as a protected area and declared a nature reserve. This was an important decision, as the grove is home to numerous rare plant and animal species.

Today, the Bergedorfer Gehölz is a popular destination for walks and nature observation. It has been opened to hikers and cyclists and offers a variety of trails and viewpoints.

The history of the Bergedorfer Gehölz is a story of change and the protection of nature. It is a valuable heritage that must be preserved and reminds us of the importance of nature conservation.
