View of the Worringer Bruch Fields

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Worringer Bruch is an old arm of the Rhine that has now silted up and formed a horseshoe-shaped loop here and was probably the bed of the Rhine in ancient times. In a rhyming chronicle that describes the Battle of Worringen in 1288, the oxbow lake is already referred to as a breach.

Worringer Bruch Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

The famous "Battle of Worringen" took place in Worringen, the northernmost district of Cologne. After that, Cologne was officially declared a free imperial city in 1288. But other areas within the district are also steeped in history. The so-called "Worringer Bruch", a 164-hectare horseshoe-shaped moorland area, is over 8,000 years old. Formerly a wet meander of the Rhine, the area is now almost completely silted up. Nevertheless, it is regularly soaked, because the lowest point in Cologne is located here and the water level rises and falls with the level of the Rhine. Numerous animal and plant species find a home in this nature reserve, which has been official since 1991.

Forest Path in Worringer Bruch

Highlight • Forest

The path itself is dead straight and too tidy for me. But what you see to the right and left is a wonderfully overgrown landscape.

Until a few years ago you could still get across on old dams. Today they are completely overgrown. The former entrances can only be recognized by the prohibition signs.

St. Pankratius Church, Worringen

Highlight • Religious Site

In Worringen, in 1828, the idea of remedying the need by building a new church arose for the first time. Until then, the town had about 2,000 inhabitants, of whom 1,700 were regular churchgoers. With this high number, a large part had to attend the service in front of the church door. Only a donation made the realization of the new building concept possible. At that time, Anna Gertrud Cremerius, daughter of Franz Adam Cremerius (mayor from 1797 to 1835) and Mar. Helene Breuer, owner of the Bergerhof and Pilgramshof, donated the land to the parish for the construction of a new church on the St. Tönnis -Straße, at the same time a sum of money of 4,000 thalers, half for the construction of a church and half for a church tower.
