Gefale Leeën (Fallen Rocks)

Covered with moss, lichens and ferns, the “Gefale Leeën” - “fallen rocks” - line the path. The rocks are made of dolomite and fell from the large rock face. Water seeps into the dolomite through fissures and accumulates on the underlying marls, a clay-rich rock. For a long time, the rock faces of the Dolomites slide down into the valley on the softened marls. Huge rockfalls like the “Gefale Leeën” can occur on the dolomite rock walls, but they are rare. They are mostly favored by the intense erosion of the foot of the slope by the Sauer. A ravine forest has developed on the restless relief around the partially overgrown stone blocks. A canyon forest consists of linden, maple, beech and elm and grows on steep slopes where the top soil and rock layer is not stable.
The Gefale Leeën can be reached via Route 1 of the Mullerthal Trail and the 8.7 km long local hiking trail R8. There are parking spaces in Rosport and Steinheim.
