The 772-meter-high Kathreinkogel, located between the Drava River and the western bay of Lake Wörthersee, has been inhabited since the 7th millennium BC. Surface finds indicate that Mesolithic hunter-gatherers (7th/6th millennium BC) and Neolithic farmers (3rd millennium BC) had already used the mountain as a settlement.

Archaeological excavations have now also revealed evidence of a Late Bronze Age settlement.
