Great Lake (Castle Howard)

Highlight • Viewpoint

A wonderful lake between Castle Howard and Coneysthorpe village, Great Lake is an idyllic place to stop for lunch. Set amongst the Castle Howard parkland, this historic lake provides a lovely backdrop as you ride into Coneysthorpe.

View of Slingsby Castle

Highlight • Historical Site

Slingsby Castle was never actually a castle, but a home built in 1620s for Sir Charles Cavendish. It is still quite impressive (particularly in the right light!). It is now a Grade II listed building and a Scheduled Monument.

You will have to admire it from afar, though, as it is not open to the public.

The Stray, Castle Howard Obelisk and Carrmire Gate

Highlight • Viewpoint

This is a fun, perfectly straight, but lumpy road that leads to Castle Howard, through the Carrmire Gate House and past the towering obelisk, a monument to the victories of the 1st Duke of Marlborough.

Its a unique road and well worth a pedal along.

Castle Howard Obelisk

Highlight • Monument

The Obelisk, raised in 1714-15, carries two sets of inscriptions. The first, in Latin, commemorates the victories of the 1st Duke of Marlborough. The second, on the west side is in English, was composed in 1731 when much of the building and landscaping had been completed. It was written with posterity in mind and is the clearest statement possible of the 3rd Earl's aspirations for his family.

Sorry no photos because the courtyard was full of people and I didn't think it appropriate. We visited the small walk in Cafe situated on the left as you're walking through the gate into the courtyard. There's a great selection of hot and cold drinks with delicious cakes, buns and biscuits to match. The staff were very nice. I highly recommend a visit.
