Stone Cycle, Irwell Sculpture Trail

Highlight • Monument

The Irwell Sculpture Trail consists of 70 art installations along a 33-mile (53 km) trail through Salford, Bury and Rossendale. The Burrs Country Park cluster of sculptures includes the Stone Cycle, Picnic Area and Waterwheel.

A triumph of regeneration, since 1986 Burrs Country Park has been transformed from an industrial waste ground to an attractive park. Reminders of its heritage remain in the guise of its Burrs Mill chimney, mill floor and water wheel.

It is home to three works of art that form a part of the Irwell Sculpture Trail. At the park's south-east entrance, artist David Kemp's Waterwheel represents the constant turn of the wheel of time and the change that the Irwell Valley continues to see.

Close together in the north-west of the park are Stone Cycle by Julie Edwards and Picnic Area by David Fryer. Stone Cycle is constructed from repurposed stone from a dismantled bridge on Bury's Market Street. Picnic Area is a mouse trap on a gigantic scale, representing the way the park has been transformed into a leisure haven to draw people in, like mice to cheese.

Burrs Weir on the River Irwell

Highlight • Structure

The weir was constructed in the late 18th century to help control the river flow and increase the speed so that it could power the spinning mill at Burrs.
