Brecon Castle

Highlight • Settlement

Brecon, the town after which the Beacons are named, is unsurprisingly a fantastic base for exploring the national park. The graceful, green forms of the Central Beacons and Pen y Fan, which at 2,907 feet (886 m) is the highest peak in Britain south of Snowdonia, rise to the south, within hiking distance. Meanwhile, it is only a short drive to the Black Mountain in the west and the Black Mountains (not to be confused with each other) in the east.

Brecon itself is a vibrant market town on the River Usk and is the start point of the historic Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal. Its lively streets are full of cafes, restaurants, pubs, independent shops and host an annual jazz festival. Its magnificent cathedral is also worth a visit.

This is where I come with my boyfriend. He looks into my eyes here every time and tells me he loves me. So, for me, this is a special place!

This is a beautiful riverside spot just five minutes walk from Brecon town centre. It is a beautiful tranquil setting with parking and nearby toilets (20p). There is a riverside walk and a small amusement arcade on site which serves refreshments. There are beautiful views of the river and the Brecon Beacons from here. Very popular with motorhomes, dog walkers and kayakers.
Parking info: Flat, tarmac municipal car park. Overnight parking is free between 1800-0800, thereafter the fee is £8 all day or £6 for up to 4hrs.

Brecon Castle

Highlight • Castle

Brecon Castle is a very unique place. It is a castle that is now within the grounds of a private hotel. Though most of the original castle is long gone, there are still the imposing remains of the tower left, and this is visible from many areas of the town. There is a particularly good view of it from the town bridge. Strategically sighted, overlooking the confluence of the Afon Honddu and the River Usk, it dominates this part of the town and is a reminder of the powers of the Normans when they started to build it in 1093. Originally, the castle would have had two entrances as well as a postern gate. There would have been a drawbridge over the River Usk and another over the Afon Honddu. At the time, it was built as the administrative and military headquarters of the Lordship of Brecon and as a reminder to all that they lived among one of the most powerful families of the day.
