Old Clay Pit Nature Reserve (Alte Tongrube)

The heart of the nature reserve is the old clay pit, around three meters below the level of the surrounding area. It has numerous small bodies of water, willow bushes, sedge reeds, reed beds, tall herbaceous meadows rich in flowers and species, and pioneer vegetation. 33 of the 73 dragonfly species native to North Rhine-Westphalia alone have been detected here. The wetland complex is an amphibian Eldorado, which is also home to the water frog, crested newt, pond newt and mountain newt. The reptiles detected so far include the forest lizard and the slow worm.
Another special feature is the Wölbacker in the nature reserve. It is a relic of an old cultural landscape use in the Middle Ages. The former arable land is now used as grassland. The bulges of the earlier use are still clearly visible. Characteristically, the rare red-backed shrike breed in the old hedge structures.
