Located between the municipalities of Grožnjan, Motovun, Buzet, on a 378 m high hill, Oprtalj (Oprtalj) is one of the most picturesque towns in northern Istria. It was founded by the Romans with the name Castrum Portulense in Histria. The first official document in which it is cited is dated 1209, as a territory under the dominion of the Patriarchate of Aquileia. In 1421, the village entered the domain of the Serenissima which made it an important center of the Istrian peninsula. In the fifteenth century, in fact, the town experienced a notable demographic and commercial growth, a growth that, thanks to the Venetian colonists, lasted until the end of the Middle Ages. Of its past as a fortress surrounded by walls today the ancient gate is barely visible; in front of it there is a large Venetian loggia with a lapidary, while nearby, on the high ramparts, there is a floor, from which the view extends to the sea.
