Wolfsegg Castle

Highlight • Castle

Wolfegg Castle

Wolfsegg was first mentioned in a document in 1358, when Louis the Brandenburger, Duke of Upper Bavaria, entrusted the "veste" to the daughters of the deceased Wolf von Schönleiten (near Regenstauf). Wolf von Schönleiten was probably the namesake of the castle. In 1367, Margartha von Schönleiten and her husband Ulrich von Lichteneck zu Eggersberg sold the castle to Hadamar IV von Laaber and his cousin Ulrich. The Lords of Laaber owned the castle until it died out in 1475. Wolfsegg later passed to the Wittelsbach dukes of the Palatinate-Neuburg line. Duke Ottheinrich gave it as a fief to Leonhard von Eck from Kelheim, and in 1533 to his son of the same name, who, as Chancellor of Upper Bavaria, had a decisive influence on state politics. 1575 to the Thumer patrician family from Regensburg, who also owned the Heuport house in Regensburg.
Later the owners changed constantly and Wolfsegg fell into disrepair. From 1856 it was used as a school, and from 1886 it belonged to the municipality, which gave it to poor citizens as apartments. It wasn't until 1932 that district local warden Georg Rauchberger saved the castle. Complete restoration by the community and extensive building research at the end of the 1980s.
Wolfsegg is a typical castle of the late Middle Ages. It is surrounded by an arch-shaped kennel through which the path to the castle ran. The six semicircular wall towers of the complex clearly indicate the late period of construction. The small gate to the main castle could only be reached via a wooden trap staircase.
The only residential building is the large residential tower or palas. The lowest floor is a barrel-vaulted room with no access to the upper floors. These were only accessible through a high entrance, which was later bricked up. For more convenient access, a beautiful stair tower made of decorated bricks was added to the palace in the 16th century. On the upper floor you can admire a well-preserved kitchen. To the east of the palace there is a semicircular wall tower with a toilet bay and access to the battlement above the curtain wall, which can be walked all around. The chapel is located in the south outside the walls and was accessible via a footbridge from the castle. On the side facing the castle you can still see the entrance to the noble gallery. An additional cistern was housed in a stalactite cave in the rock beneath the castle.
