Landwehr Ditches of Hameln

Highlight • Historical Site

It must have been hard times, back in the 14th century. Around 1350 "the black death" raged and swept away about 1/3 of the population. The administrative units sealed themselves off from one another with "Landwehr trenches". After years of work, the trenches are said to have been finished here in 1375. At this point the trenches are even made double and triple. A detailed description can be found on the board.
In the villages, the only permanent building was often a fortified tower - often the tower of a church or a fortified church. If the village was robbed and burned down, the villagers - if you were lucky - could at least save their lives and their seeds in it (see also highlights in Devese, Arnum, Lüdersen etc.)

Schlieker's fountain

Highlight • Restaurant

The excursion restaurant and the fountain are located on historical grounds. Since 1688, the area north of today's Holtenser Strasse was designated as a shooting range for the Hamelin militia and the rifle companies of the city. Not much has changed to this day: the shooting range of the shooting clubs of Hamelin - the Rifle Guild and the German Rifle Club - as well as the rally center of the riflemen are still on the grounds.

The myth of the Storchenbrunnen has been handed down from generation to generation in Hamelin families: a stork from the depths of the well was supposed to bring the children of Hamelin to the light of day. This fairytale-like representation gave the fountain its present name as early as the end of the 17th century. A doll fastened in the masonry still points to the legend today. It was also part of her that a blackboard at the well would ask children to run to the host of the Schlieker Fountain, to pick up pieces of sugar and throw them into the depths of the well. According to legend, the stork then brings as many children as sugar cubes were thrown into the family.
