Fort-Victor Emmanuel, better known as the Barrière de L'Esseillon, is a series of five forts built in the 19th century on the rocky lock or "rocky close" which closes the upper valley of the Arc like a padlock. These forts served to protect the kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia from a possible French invasion. Borders change but buildings remain. Each of the forts bears the name of a member of the Savoy family, the most famous being that of Victor Emmanuel.

Be careful not to confuse it with the innumerable Forts Vauban which dot the borders of the current French territory.
