Westerheide Heath near 't Bluk

Highlight • Natural

The heath in this area, called the Zuiderheide, used to be a communal heath where farmers grazed sheep. Now it is a beautiful nature reserve that turns purple at the end of the summer.

The Trappenberg is a raised hill in the forest that is over 23 meters high. Next to the hill is a pit full of boulders. A nice place for a break.

Naarden Fortress

Highlight • Historical Site

City, originated on the northwest side of the Gooi near the Zuiderzee (now IJsselmeer). Naarden, first mentioned around 900, was further north-east and was granted city rights around 1325. Around 1350, Naarden was destroyed by Hoekse troops. Partly due to the increasing coastal erosion, rebuilding followed further inland, for which Count William V granted permission in 1351. Due to its location on the sea dike (Westdijk) between Naardermeer and Zuiderzee, Naarden acquired great military significance. In 1355 the defensive belt around the city was completed and in 1403 Albrecht van Beieren gave permission to build a seaport.

Naarden Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

The building is made of baked and cut stone. The western facade has a large and a small top with steps. On the north side there is an elegant six-sided tower.

Two of the facade stones bear the text: "QVICQ D ERIT SUPERANDA OIS FORTUNA EEREDO EST" and "IST LYDEN IST VRVEGHT DRAEGTET SOOT GODT VVEGT". The facade also contains three coats of arms without blazons but with cartouches.

Above the portico you will see the images of faith, hope and justice. The frieze contains the text: "GOD REGIERT AL ANNO 1601".

The image of love is placed at the top of the large facade, and at the small top a sitting lion with a coat of arms without a blazon. The side wall has lion masks and a stone with the text: "ANNO 1601" in a cartouche.

A skylight on the side wall attracts attention, especially because of the chased lead decorations. The crowning of this roof window and weather vane on the aforementioned turret represent the double eagle from the Naarden coat of arms.

Easy parking on the Kon. Wilhelminalaan in Bussum.
Various coffee stops possible along the way.
We did that at nature monuments in 's Graveland. Only the last part there we drove a bit too far, which meant a too long stretch on asphalt instead of through forest.
