Trapp Family Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

Just a short (but steep!) hike up from the Trapp Family Lodge is the Trapp Family Chapel, a simple stone building deep in the woods. The Chapel was built by Werner von Trapp, who escaped with his family from Nazi-occupied Austria to Vermont. After arriving here, he enlisted in the US Army in 1943 and served in the 10th Mountain Division, an elite ski force that fought in the Alps. Werner swore that if he survived the war, he would build a chapel on his family's property in Vermont. After safely returning home, he made good on his promise and between 1945-48 completed this chapel. This peaceful site is a must-see for anyone in the area and interested in the history of the von Trapp family.

The Trapp Family Lodge

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Beautiful views for those willing to endure the two-mile uphill trek. Nice side-trip off the otherwise pleasant - but somewhat predictable- Stowe Recreational Path. Be prepared to be on your brakes the whole way down.

Green Chair Overlook #2

Highlight • Viewpoint

This second overlook with a green chair is just as pretty as the first and an equally good photo opportunity. In the fall you can take in the colors from here since it is a little more heavily wooded.

Green Chair Overlook #1

Highlight • Viewpoint

Named for the faded dark green chairlift chair that is mounted on a tree, the Green Chair overlook faces Mount Mansfield and offers stunning views through the trees at the peak, and is a great place to rest after a steep little climb. This popular vista is a great place to sip some water either on the chair or at the picnic table behind it, and snap a few photos before continuing onward in Cady Hill Forest.

51.2 km

Cady Hill Forest has one of Stowe’s most popular multi-use trail networks for mountain biking, trail running, and hiking. This extensive trail system is well-maintained, well-marked, and a pleasant place to explore if you need a break from some of the high-elevation hikes that Stowe has to offer. Although the views are not as dramatic as other hikes in the area, Cady Hill Forest is well known for its verdant green forests - which some locals call the “maple jungle" - making an excellent area for leaf-peeping in the fall. Be aware as you hike these trails, however, as they are extremely popular with mountain bikers. Always keep an ear out for them and be prepared to step off the trail to let them pass. Please also be aware of signage indicating whether or not hikers are allowed; some trails in Cady Hill Forest are exclusively reserved for mountain biking.
