Moerstraten War Memorial

Highlight • Monument

"In memory of the heroes who died for us”

The oldest monument that commemorates fallen Canadian soldiers is located near Moerstraten. The initiative for a monument came from the population. Amid great interest, a liberator unveiled this memory of Canadian dead in August 1945. Comrades of the fallen were present to lay wreaths.

During Sunday, October 29, 1944, several tanks of the Canadian tank regiment Governor General Foot Guards approached Moerstraten from the south. Two tanks got stuck in the greasy mud on the north side of the village. The German troops disabled both tanks, killing four Canadians. They were given a joint field grave on the corner of the Luienhoekweg and the Moerstraatsebaan, near the Potersbos. A few days later, the Canadians buried five other soldiers from the Canadian Grenadier Guards and the Algonquin Regiment at this location. They had died in the battle in and around Welberg. This brought the number to nine.

In the spring of 1945, the Canadian army started constructing a Canadian War Cemetery near Bergen op Zoom. The first burials took place in the last week of April. The nine soldiers at the Potersbos were also given a final resting place.

The people of Moerstraten had not forgotten the sacrifice of the nine Canadian soldiers. Probably on the initiative of a theology student, a monument was built in the summer of 1945 on the site of the former field grave. It is the oldest Canadian war memorial in the Netherlands.

On August 26, 1945, the monument at the Potersbos was unveiled amid great interest. Lieutenant Colonel Bill Cromb, himself involved in the liberation of the region, was asked for the unveiling. Comrades of the fallen were present to lay wreaths.

In the center of the monument is a gravestone with the names of the nine Canadians. On the back is a standing cross with the emblem of the 1st Canadian Army. There are two plaques in front of this with a word of thanks from the residents of Moerstraten; “In remembrance of the heroes who died for us”. The whole is surrounded by nine large, connected granite garnets.
