Until 1315 the Catholic inhabitants of Spankeren, Dieren and Laag Soeren in Spankeren went to church. When in that year the chapel of the “Hof te Dieren” was granted parish rights, a part of the Dieren parishioners went to this chapel for worship. Archives show that in 1590 Johan Hendriks, former chaplain of “Middachten”, was in charge of the Spankeren church and parish. From several written sources it appears that Hendriks is first called a chaplain and later a minister. So possibly he was both the last pastor and the first pastor of Spankeren!
In 1364 the church was dilapidated and Pastor Van der Eijven agreed with the residents that they would build a new church. He also agrees that he and his successors will maintain the Church. In 1550, under Father Beltgen, the church burned down again to a large extent and was rebuilt. This pastor was steward of the Order of St. John and was replaced in Spankeren by Heinricus Gladbach. The Reformation in the 16th century resulted in the Spankeren church becoming a Protestant church.
