Escalles

Highlight • Settlement

Escalles is located in an evergreen valley and has a beautiful pebble beach with sand and rocks, surrounded by numerous hiking trails. On clear days you can see the English coast from Escalles.
The village has approximately 228 inhabitants.
Escalles attracts tourists with its views of the hinterland. The main tourist attraction is Cap Blanc-Nez, the northernmost cliff in all of France, classified and a member of the Great Territories of France. This cliff, made of rocks and chalk marl, rises to 134 meters high and is home to impressive flora and fauna.
The village dates back to the time of the Roman conquest.
In the center of Escalles you will find three restaurants and a hotel.

Cliffs of Escalles and Wissant

Highlight • Natural Monument

A steep, bikeable trail leads down to the beach below the towering white cliffs. A Blockhaus in good condition sits along a sidetrail in the cliffs high above the water level. As the beach faces Nordwest, summers have great sunsets.

Cape Blanc-Nez

Highlight • Viewpoint

The rocks, with their cracks and small caves in the calcareous wall, provide an important nesting site for numerous bird species such as jackdaws, house martins, fulmars, kestrels, gulls, terns and herring gulls. As part of a renaturation project in 2006, a section of the asphalt road leading to the summit and the parking spaces there were completely removed. Instead, a parking lot about 300 meters inland was significantly expanded.

The Cap Blanc-Nez War Memorial (Dover Patrol Monument) is a major war memorial erected on the cliffs of Cap Blanc-Nez, near Sangatte. It honours the British naval forces and the Dover Patrol, a key unit of the Royal Navy that secured the Straits of Dover during the First and Second World Wars.

From this Cap Blanc-Nez you have an extraordinary view. Accessible at low tide by a staircase, the beach of Cap Blanc-Nez stretches to infinity: the sea recedes several tens of meters revealing a beach as far as the eye can see of fine sand and with a breathtaking view of the Cape Gray-Nose.

View from Mont d'Hubert

Highlight • Viewpoint

Excavations carried out before the construction of a car park on Mont d'Hubert, near Cap Blanc Nez (Pas-de-Calais), have uncovered the remains of a Middle Neolithic camp (4,200 to 3,800 years before our era). The camp, covering three hectares, surrounded by a ditch and visible from more than thirty kilometers away, has yielded remains of animal and human bones, ceramics and flints.
