View of Auersberg

Highlight • Viewpoint

In summer and winter there is a wonderful view of the beautiful Auersberg. A little further you might think you're on a ranch with all the cattle.

High Plateau and Karst Trail

Highlight • Trail

Below the Mühlberg there is a small plateau which, according to Matthias Claudius, "... and rising from the meadows, the white fog is wonderful ..." also looks a bit Scottish. In the forest next to it, a small maze of paths runs over an area covered by weathered rock with shrub vegetation.

The Eibenstock dam is the largest reservoir in Saxony and supplies more than half a million people with drinking water. A hilly bike path leads around the lake, which always gives you great views of the lake.

Eibenstock Reservoir

Highlight • Lake

The Eibenstock dam is the largest drinking water dam in Saxony. It is also affectionately known locally as “The Giant Barrel of Eibenstock”. The dam supplies the Chemnitz and Zwickau area with drinking water. It also has an important function for flood protection in the region and increases the water level of the Zwickauer Mulde during dry periods. A hydroelectric power plant ensures environmentally friendly energy generation.

The dam was built between 1974 and 1987. To achieve this, the village of Muldenhammer and a few hamlets had to be relocated and a railway line had to be closed. With the steep Eibenstock line, Saxony lost its only standard-gauge railway, which could handle enormous gradients of up to 1:20.

Although the dam was only completed in 1984 and the entire system in 1987, the dam was put into operation in 1982. The test jam even began in 1980.
