Rennsteig Trail Near Neuhaus am Rennweg

Highlight • Trail

After the turn-off from the industrial area onto the forest road, it's a complete disaster. The forest road is paved with fist-sized gravel stones. And that goes over the Werra spring until about 5 km before Eisfeld.

A good starting point for hikes in all directions, located directly on the Rennsteig Trail. For example, Rennsteig tours toward Neuhaus or Friedrichshöhe. Or to the Weidmannsheil lookout point, the Schwarzaquelle spring, and the Scheibe-Alsbach reservoir. Easily accessible via the country road from Neuhaus/Rennweg toward Limbach.

Rennsteigwarte on Eselsberg

Highlight • Viewpoint

If you want to have the total Rennsteig overview: Here is your chance! The observation tower "Rennsteigwarte" stands on the donkey mountain and increases it by another 33 meters. 150 steps you have to overcome, then beckons great views of the Schneekopf, the Schwarzatal or the summits of the Fichtelgebirge. If you want to make the Rennsteig in one day, you better leave this stop;)

Unfortunately the forest does not look good anymore, a lot of damage caused by the bark beetle.

Werra Spring Hut

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The new Gasthaus an der Werraquelle offers more guest comfort than the old version. A nice resting point in the hiking area around the donkey mountain between Masserberg and Fehrenbach. Whether the area has lost to hiking charm through the new building, everyone may decide for themselves.

Eisfelder Resting Place

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Here you can relax. That's why the place is not called that way. The name goes back to the coachmen who once maneuvered their heavy wagons over the Rennsteig. Here, the poor horses were stretched out briefly, so they could rest a bit. For the perfect break refreshment, the Werra spring can provide a bit further, bubbling fresh from a snapdragon, before splashing on the way to the Weser. If you fancy a night in the nature boy style: The small hut offers sufficient protection.

September 9, 2023,Rennsteig: Von Neuhaus zu den Werraquellen
New tour, new happiness! And new experiences. Today it's an all-round positive: you can (if you're lucky?) take a bike with you on the Franconia-Thuringia Express (RE42) on a Saturday. From Saalfeld the 405 bus with a bicycle trailer took me up to Neuhaus. That was really great.

Unfortunately, 8km are missing, which somewhat distorts the overall experience. But it's still a very nice tour.
