The Valley Gardens, Windsor Great Park

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

Created by the shared vision of Sir Eric Savill and Hope Finlay, these 250 acres of undulating valleys were planted with exotic azaleas, magnolias and other blooms from all over the world. Our visitors love to wander through the remarkable maze of twisting woodland tracks and exotic scented blooms.

Every season offers collections that will surprise and delight even the most seasoned of horticulturists all year round, including National Collections of Magnolia, Rhododendron Species and Glenn Dale Azaleas, as well as Himalayan and Chinese Birches.

A short stroll from the Pavillion, the Cascade is a 30-foot (9 m) waterfall. Created in 1789, its presence relies on a decent amount of rain and it’s at its most impressive after prolonged, heavy rainfall.

Just a little bit further along the trail are the Leptis Magna Ruins, which were built from masonry recovered from an ancient Roman city that existed in what is today Libya.

Follow the path for Virginia Water from the Savill Garden car park, and you will soon encounter Obelisk Lawn - where you will often be greeted by the scene of children playing in the play area, and groups of family and friends enjoying picnics around the majestic cedar trees. Here you can enjoy a drink and a snack from Obelisk Lawn’s resident mobile café, as you admire the sensational views offered across Obelisk Pond.

The magnificent Cumberland Obelisk rises high on the lawn in honour of the Duke of Cumberland, son of King George II. Here, an inscription commemorates the Duke’s military services in Windsor Great Park, an ode to a son from his loving father.
