Railroad Tunnel Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The Railroad Tunnel Trail sits on miles of old railroad track that connected Las Vegas to Boulder City, eventually all the way to Hoover Dam. There are 5 tunnels located along the trail and are approximately 300 feet in length & 25 feet wide. They were designed to fit large equipment being transported to Hoover Dam.

Highlight • Structure

You drive from Boulder City, Nevada to Lake Mead, more precisely to the Hoover Dam. However, this is already in Arizona. That's why the sign is halfway back.

Lake Mead water level

Highlight • Lake

Normally, this wouldn't be a highlight. But for one thing, this water level has been like this for years, and for another, it's a testament to how water is managed here.

Hoover Dam

Highlight • Monument

The massive dam was built between 1930 and 1935 with the main purpose of providing controlled water delivery to the surrounding states of Arizona, Nevada and California and to generate electricity. The dam was named after the 31st President of the USA: Herbert C. Hoover.

The dam has 17 turbine-driven generators and delivers more than half of the 2,080 megawatts of energy produced to Southern California. Depending on how much water is retained by the dam, the Colorado River has a coffee-brown color, since sediments are stirred up when the water level is high. If more water is held back, the river is almost clear and has a turquoise blue color.

From the higher parking areas you have a nice walk down and you get a good view over the area.
