The first foundation stones of the church at the former bishopric of Lebus date back to the Middle Ages, circa 1355. When the church was completely destroyed in a fire in 1801, it was rebuilt as a neoclassical plastered structure with the floor plan still visible today. The unusual proportions of the church interior and tower are a result of World War II. The church was so badly damaged that only the western section was rebuilt as a temporary church.
