Stroopplein Borgloon

Highlight • Cycleway

The metamorphosis of the station surroundings in the shadow of the syrup factory in Borgloon is a fact. The design was realized with respect for nature and the heritage value of the site. It includes the development and organization of the former station surroundings into a visitor site, as a cycle connection on the former fruit railway, and as a base for hikers and cyclists. The new pavilion is the eye-catcher with its sleek, pure design and refers to the former station surroundings. The pavilion is subtly equipped with resting places, charging points, information carriers, etc. The square transforms into a pleasant green environment, with the parking subtly hidden.

Wijnants-Groenendaels Steam Syrup Factory

Highlight • Historical Site

1879
The story of the steam syrup factory began in 1879. That year, the Wynants family bought land on Stationsstraat in Borgloon, where the syrup factory was established. In those years, syrup distilling evolved from a cottage industry to an industrial activity and syrup distilling was commercialized.
1900-1950
Thanks to the rise of steam power, among other things, it was now possible to distill syrup on a larger scale. In the first half of the 20th century, Borgloon grew into the center of syrup production.
1960
But the boom did not last. From 1960 onwards, many syrup distilleries in and around Borgloon started to struggle. The demand for syrup gradually decreased. Ultimately, by the end of the 1970s, only the Wynants syrup factory remained. 1988
However, the situation was no longer tenable and so all syrup distilling activities were also stopped here.
1999
A part of the syrup factory, including the technical installations, was protected as a monument in 1999.
2005
The city council of Borgloon purchased the steam syrup factory to prevent further decay. An agreement was made with the Bleus brothers to once again distill syrup in the syrup factory in a traditional way.
2006-2007
In 2006-2007, the Monumentenstrijd followed on TV channel Canvas. The Loonse syrup factory became the proud winner of this battle. Plans were quickly made to restore the site. A first round of restoration came with the renovation of the Loons square and the restoration of the chimney. 2017
The majority of the restoration started in February 2017. After an intense period of major works, we now have the pleasure of introducing visitors to the restored syrup factory and the fruit experience centre.

There was also once a beguinage in Borgloon. It was founded in 1258 at the Graethempoort where you can only view the old chapel (Graethemkapel). In line with the protected chapel that is being restored, a neo-Gothic chapel was also built between 1909 and 1912. The beguinage was founded at the time for nine beguines. It was a square-type beguinage with the chapel of the Johannietershospital in the center where the Count of Loon, Louis I, who died in 1171, was buried. During archaeological excavations in the 1960s, the bones of Lodewijk and those of his wife Agnes van Reinecke were found. She donated the hospital to the abbey of Villers in 1174.

Louis I and his wife Agnes are both buried in the beguinage chapel of Borgloon. The city, with the support of the province of Limburg, has major plans for the realization of a new experience center of which the beguinage chapel and the guest house chapel are part, as you can read at visitlimburg.be/nl/blog/de-historie- from-the-county-wage

23°C and strong gusts of wind. That's really it for cyclists. And then a nice fresh lager, straight from the brewery. Where can we be better.
