De Hoop Mill (Tholen)

Highlight • Monument

Molen De Hoop is a windmill from 1736 on the Oudelandsepoort in Tholen. It is a round stone tower mill with a wingspan of 23.60 meters. The mill is located on the water of the old city walls along a walking path.

In 1806, the city sold the mill to Arij de Hond and Johannis Bakker. After that, the mill had many owners until it was sold back to the municipality. The mill was inhabited until 1901. The many windows in the lower part still indicate this. Until 1948, grinding was done commercially. Remarkable is the ten-sided stage.

The mill is operational and can be visited every Saturday between 13:00 and 17:00. Furthermore, the De Hoop mill can be visited when the mill is running and by appointment.

More about this mill can be read at molendatabase.nl

Our Lady of the Assumption

Highlight • Religious Site

Roman Catholic hall church, located on the Markt in the center of the city, built in 1900 by order of the Catholic parish of Our Lady of the Assumption under the leadership of Father Beddink in neo-Gothic style and designed by architect P. Snel in Hoorn. The church was built after the demolition of the old church in 1900 and was consecrated on November 19, 1900. The so-called Patronage building adjacent to the southwest side of the church and Paulinastraat is not protected. This also applies to the organ in the church building.

Port of Tholen

Highlight • Structure

This bronze ship gun was cast in 1614 by Johannes Burgerhuys in Middelburg. It probably comes from a ship of the Zeeland Admiralty. The gun was fished up in 1971 by the fishing vessel Breskens 5 in the North Sea west of Dunkirk. Through the mediation of the Huis en Heem association, which had a gun carriage made, it could be placed in 1983 on the dike along the Thoolse harbour, near the Brugstraat.
