Solkan Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Salcano bridge is famous for being the bridge with the largest stone arch in the world.
Completed in the early 1900s, it was part of a series of bridges (worth visiting) and tunnels on the railway line that connected Vienna to the southern provinces of the empire.
Legend has it that, when the wooden scaffolding that allowed its construction was being removed, the dutiful Austrian engineer in charge of the construction site was observing the scene from a nearby cliff with a gun in his hand, ready to put an end to his life if the total lowering of the bridge arch had been greater than that foreseen by his calculations.
The engineer survived, not like the bridge blown up by the A-U themselves during the First World War...

View of the Solkan Railway Bridge

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Solkan Bridge (Slovene: Solkanski most, Italian: Ponte di Salcano) is a 219.7-meter (721 ft) arch bridge over the Soča River near Nova Gorica in western Slovenia (by railway terminology it is a viaduct). With an arch span of 85 meters (279 ft), it is the world's longest stone arch railroad bridge (and second-longest stone arch bridge, after Germany's Syratal Viaduct [de], a road bridge). It holds this record because later construction technology used reinforced concrete to build bridges. It was originally built in the time of the Secession, between 1900 and 1905, and officially opened in 1906. ( From Wikipedia )

G1 Isonzo Cycle Route

Highlight • Cycleway

A nearly perfect, very shady, paved bike path along and slightly above the Soca River, next to the single-track railway line. There are also many rest areas with tables and seating, as well as several clearings for admiring the emerald-green waters of the Soca.

This almost 50 kilometer long cycle path connects Gorizia, on the Italian-Slovenian border, to Kanal, in Slovenia, entering the Isonzo Valley. It is a cycle path in perfect condition, mostly separated from car traffic and with breathtaking views of the turquoise waters of the Isonzo river.

Scenic Vineyard Road in Prepotto

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

A flowing road with little traffic that offers an excellent alternative to the nearby SP14, which brings a greater flow of cars.

In Prepotto you have the option of keeping to the right and continuing to climb the valley, straddling the Italian-Slovenian border, or to descend again towards the plain keeping left towards Cividale.
