Eguisheim Castle

In Roman times, the square of the city most likely stood on a wooden building on an earthen mound: a motte. In the 8th century, a first Merovingian villa is said to belong to an important landowner named Egino. It may be the beginning of a city that took its name from its founder. In the year 1000, a small octagonal fortress is built around a courtyard. The moats disappear in the 16th century.
