Fränkische Saale Cycle Route Near Ipthausen

Highlight • Cycleway

The long-distance cycle route leads from the Saale source east of Bad Königshofen i. Grabfeld to Gemünden am Main. Cyclists can expect a varied landscape, historic towns, cozy little places and diverse landscape panoramas. While the first section to Bad Neustadt an der Saale does not always run parallel to the river, the rest of the section is more closely aligned with the river's course. Historic town centers in Hammelburg and Gemünden am Main invite you to take a break. Bad Kissingen is well known as a classic spa town. The first spa guest was recorded here as early as 1520. The long-distance cycle route should not be confused with the Saale cycle path, which begins in the Fichtel Mountains and, after running through Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt, ends at the mouth of the Saale in Barby on the Elbe.

Long and beautiful carillon. A game for connoisseurs: who recognizes the melody? 😅

The former mayor's house is located here. It is a two-storey, eaves-facing mansard roof building with corner pilasters, pointed arched windows and a portal with the Madonna of the Protection. A very beautiful house and an eye-catcher.

On October 1, 1911, the youngest fountain on Bad Königshofen's market square, the Luitpold Fountain, was inaugurated. It features a vase-like fountain bowl with a bulbous fountain stem, adorned with lion heads. Above it is a base with coats of arms-bearing putti and a baluster column with a figure of the Reaper, limestone and bronze, by Balthasar Schmitt (1858–1942), 1911.

Market Square, Bad Königshofen

Highlight • Settlement

The focal point of Bad Königshofen is the large market square with its three ornamental fountains: the Luitpold Fountain under the linden tree, the Röhrenbrunnen (Tube Fountain), and the Michaelsbrunnen (Michael Fountain), above which the wrought-iron angel "floats." The Vierröhrenbrunnen (Four-Tube Fountain) in front of the Schlundhaus (Thrush House) was fed by a water pipe even before the Thirty Years' War, making it an important part of the town. Also located on the market square is the medieval Kornstein (cornstone) from 1525, which formerly served as a grain measuring device.

Poppenholz Nature Reserve Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A very beautiful bike path from Irmelshausen toward Breitensee or Herbstadt. Shortly after Irmelshausen, you have a view of the Gleichberge Mountains. The path is easy to cycle and leads through the Poppenholz Nature Reserve, a forest area worthy of protection due to its remoteness. The path to Irmelshausen is generally easy to cycle, except for a short stretch of rough gravel, and is shaded. You take the shortest route from Trappstadt to Irmelshausen.
