Church of Liessies

Highlight • Religious Site

The church is part of the former Liessies Abbey, which dates back to the 8th century. The abbey was founded by Wibert, Count of Poitou, who sought refuge in the region thanks to lands given to him by Pépin le Bref. Built in the 16th century at the gates of the abbey, the church served both as a shelter for the population and protection for its powerful neighbour. The church has two defensive towers on its facade and was built with a small bell tower so as not to be overshadowed by the sumptuous abbey church.

Listed as a historical monument since 1944, the church contains many remarkable elements, including numerous wooden statues dating from the 16th to 18th centuries, which are protected as historical monuments. There are also four paintings from the 18th century representing the four cardinal virtues: Temperance, Justice, Strength and Prudence.
