Niagara-on-the-Lake Historic District

Highlight • Historical Site

Niagara on the Lake is a picturesque town near Niagara Falls and as the name indicates it is located where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario. Plenty of things to do there, like dining on the historic district, visiting For George and any of the wineries located around the city.
It was my first time bike touring in that region and I was impressed by the trail along the Niagara River and the Niagara Parkway! I am sure coming back soon.

View of Old Fort Niagara

Highlight • Viewpoint

The bathing area on the shore is rocky, but a little further out in the water you stand on fine sand.

Peller Estates Winery

Highlight • Structure

This area is the prime location for grape and wine production in Ontario.
There are countless wineries along the way that you can visit for production tour and wine tasting.
One of the highlights of the area is Ice Wine. Sweet, strong wine that is made from the grapes that are left to dry and freeze on plant and collected mid January for fermentation. Beautiful!
Be careful with tasting if you are not staying overnight in the area. Roads are busy, specially on weekends.
Enjoy and respect.

Living Water Wayside Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

The Living Water Wayside Chapel is a very tiny church, built in 1964 by the Niagara Falls Christian Reformed Church. The church is so small, only 6 guests can fit inside at a time. The church welcomes visitors of all faiths. Right next door is a produce stand, a great spot to get some fresh fruit on an outing.

Waterfront Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The Niagara-on-the-Lake Waterfront Trail follows the shoreline where Lake Ontario meets the mouth of the Niagara River, offering a relaxed walk through one of Ontario's most picturesque waterfront settings. As the official western terminus of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail, this section links parks, beaches, historic sites, and quiet residential streets with continuous views across the lake. The mostly flat route is easy to follow, making it ideal for a leisurely stroll while taking in the area's history, wineries, and waterfront scenery. There is no fee to access the trail.

Butler's Barracks National Historic Site

Highlight • Historical Site

Named after Loyalist officer Colonel John Butler and his famed Butler's Rangers, Butler's Barracks was built after the War of 1812 to replace military buildings destroyed during the conflict. By the mid-1800s, the site had grown into a large British military complex with more than 20 buildings, serving the army until 1871 before later becoming a training camp for the Canadian militia. Four original 19th-century wooden buildings still stand today, offering a glimpse into nearly 150 years of military history in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
