Trubenhausen Church with defensive tower

Highlight • Religious Site

The tower to the west of the church was originally built as a defensive tower to protect the residents of the small town of Trubenhausen. Its slate-covered tower top with its proportionally small bell-shaped dome was added much later. The western part of the nave is Romanesque and was enlarged in 1597.

Gelstertal Viaduct Uengsterode

Highlight • Bridge

A viaduct is a bridge whose supporting structure consists of several arches. Such an 80m long structure is located in the north of Uengsterode.

The sandstone arch viaduct was built in 1913-1914 for the Gelstertalbahn, which ran from Eichenberg via Großalmerode to Walburg. The Gelstertalbahn was opened in 1915, the year of the World War, and was used for passenger and freight transport until 1973. In 1983 freight traffic was also stopped.

You can find further interesting information and photos about the viaduct and the Gelstertalbahn on the information board 14 on the “Technical-Historical Teaching and Hiking Trail” at the northern entrance to Uengsterode.
